The Issue

Food waste is a pressing issue that affects not just our local community in Cincinnati but the entire nation. In fact, according to ReFED, a national nonprofit dedicated to ending food loss and waste across the U.S., approximately 40% of food goes to waste annually. This staggering statistic reflects a profound inefficiency in our food system that has both economic and environmental implications.

In Cincinnati, food waste is a significant problem contributing to greenhouse gas emissions, given that waste in landfills generates methane—a potent greenhouse gas. Moreover, while perfectly edible food is thrown away, many Cincinnatians face food insecurity. It's unacceptable that in a city as vibrant as ours, families are going without proper nutrition while food that could sustain them is discarded.

Thankfully, addressing this issue is both viable and necessary. We can start by implementing comprehensive food recovery programs in collaboration with local supermarkets, restaurants, and catering businesses, to redirect surplus food to those in need. Furthermore, enhancing community awareness and education about food waste through workshops and community events can empower individuals to make small but impactful changes in their household consumption habits.

We implore the Cincinnati City Council to take immediate action by establishing a city-wide task force dedicated to reducing food waste. This task force would spearhead initiatives such as creating food waste reduction targets, incentivizing businesses to donate excess food, and enhancing composting infrastructures to manage unavoidable waste more sustainably.

The fight against food waste in Cincinnati requires the collective effort of government, businesses, and everyday citizens. By signing this petition, you are advocating for a sustainable community that values every meal and every individual. Help us create a Cincinnati where no food is wasted, and no person goes hungry. Please sign this petition to demand action against food waste in our city.
