The Issue

Living in Front Royal, where water is as precious as oil, it alarms me to see the rapid expansion of data centers. These massive structures, while silently powering our digital world, consume vast amounts of water and electricity. My concern, and that of many others in our community, is the strain these facilities put on our local resources without necessarily benefiting the people living nearby.

Data centers are known for their immense water usage, employed largely for cooling purposes. According to a 2021 Uptime Institute report, a typical data center can use between one to five million gallons of water daily. This is a concerning statistic, especially for areas undergoing frequent droughts, like  Virginia. Water shortages are already a pressing issue here, with residents often asked to conserve water. Installing more data centers without addressing their water consumption can exacerbate these shortages, leading to long-term environmental and societal harm.

Additionally, while data centers are crucial for internet infrastructure, the question arises: how many local jobs do they genuinely create? A single data center might employ around 30 to 50 full-time positions, according to a 2020 Statista report. This number is startlingly low compared to the resources consumed. Is this trade-off worth it, especially in economically challenged regions where job creation should be a priority?

I'm not advocating for a complete halt of technological progress, but rather, we should urge data center developers and policymakers to implement sustainable practices. This includes innovating water recycling technology, utilizing renewable energy sources, and transparently outlining their economic impact on local communities before development.

Join me in calling upon local authorities and data center companies to be more responsible. We need clear plans that balance technological advancement with environmental stewardship and community support.
