Adding Lighting for Foster's Skatepark

The Issue

As a member of the thriving skateboarding community in Kokomo, IN, I have witnessed firsthand the surge in popularity of our beloved sport. Our local spot, Foster's Skatepark, has become a beacon for skateboarders young, old, beginning & experienced from various regions around Indiana. However, with the time zone change that happens every fall, visibility becomes an issue as early as 5pm - which is almost 6 hours before the park officially closes, acdording to Google Maps.

This lack of adequate lighting not only hinders our ability to enjoy this recreational space fully but also poses significant safety risks. According to data from The National Safety Council (NSC), poor visibility is one of the leading causes of accidents in outdoor sports facilities. Along with that fact, nearby empty outdoor sports facilities are vacant with lights on. Thus leaving the individuals at the skatepark in the dark and wondering why.

By adding lights to the skatepark, it wouldn't only make things more fair in the community,  like its surrounding other sports facilities that Foster's Park has to offer. This decision would provide proof that more citizens enjoy skating, perhaps more than other sports. This would also assure accurate hours at Foster's Skatepark, as Google Maps says isn't until, 11pm. In helping us advance in this, we can all ensure that all patrons have a safe, fun and equally accessible environment in this important thriving communit. Its an asset that will benefit throughout the years to follow. This simple addition would significantly improve safety conditions for the local playground right by this skatepark. It would extend useable park hours for not just the skaters of the community but of the families, friends and rebuilding of Kokomo.

Join me in urging city officials to add lights on Foster's Skatepark until it closes each night. Your signature will help illuminate our path towards a safer and more inclusive experience. Not only for you, but everyone in the community or even just traveling to Kokomo. Please sign this petition & light up our future.
