The Issue

Help create a justice system that treats addiction with recovery, support, and real solutions

Every day, people struggling with addiction are caught in a cycle of punishment without receiving the treatment and support they need to truly recover.

Addiction is not simply a failure of character or a lack of willpower. It is a condition that affects the brain, behavior, families, and communities. Many people struggling with addiction have lived through trauma, loss, mental health challenges, or years of trying to survive without the resources needed to heal.

A prison sentence alone does not teach someone how to recover. It does not provide the therapy, recovery skills, accountability, or support needed to build a different future.

When people are given the chance to heal, they have the opportunity to change their lives, repair relationships, and become stronger members of their communities.

Why I started this petition

I started this petition because I am watching someone I love face the possibility of losing decades of their life while needing an opportunity for treatment and recovery.

This is not just about one person. Families across Illinois are facing the pain of watching loved ones struggle with addiction while the system often focuses on punishment instead of addressing the reasons behind the addiction.

People need accountability, but they also need a real chance to recover. Without treatment and support, the cycle continues, families suffer, and communities are left with the same problems.

I believe Illinois can do better.

What we are asking for

We are calling on Illinois leaders, lawmakers, judges, and justice officials to expand options that prioritize recovery and rehabilitation

officials to expand options that prioritize recovery and rehabilitation for people struggling with addiction.

We are asking Illinois to invest in:

• Long-term addiction treatment programs that address the root causes of substance use
• Trauma-informed therapy and mental health support
• Peer recovery programs where people with lived experience help others find a path forward
• Structured reentry services that support housing, employment, stability, and continued recovery
• Treatment-focused solutions that help people rebuild their lives and reduce future harm

Illinois has an opportunity to lead the way by showing that recovery-focused solutions can create safer communities and stronger families.

Why this matters

Addiction impacts everyone. It affects parents, children, partners, friends, and entire communities.

Punishment alone does not erase addiction. Healing, treatment, accountability, and support give people the tools to change.

When people recover, families are restored. When people receive help, communities become stronger.

This petition is about creating a system that recognizes recovery is possible and that people deserve the opportunity to change their lives.

Please sign and share this petition to support a future where addiction is addressed with effective treatment, compassion, accountability, and hope.

Change can start in Illinois. Together, we can help create a better path forward for families across the state and eventually across the nation.
