At tomorrow's event, you will hear from Bert Lockwood, distinguished service professor and Director of the Urban Morgan Institute for Human Rights at the University of Cincinnati's College of Law. You'll also hear from RISE founder Dr. Angie Vredeveld and RISE President of Board of Directors, Ellen Galloway. And then, you'll hear from Arnold Agaba, the Ugandan human rights lawyer directing our efforts to get a law against acid attacks in Uganda! Julie and Daniel, acid attack survivors and co-directors of Beyond the Scars Initiative in Uganda, will also be on the call!
In the last two years:
- RISE started a petition on change.org to get a law against acid attacks in Uganda. Thank you for signing!
- RISE teamed up with Ugandan human rights lawyer Arnold Agaba to determine the best process for getting a law. Arnold helped us understand the process needed to present a really good case to the Ugandan Parliament.
- RISE did country-wide research of acid attack survivors across Uganda.
- RISE compiled that research into a Situational Analysis, results we will be sharing with you during the presentation.
- RISE drafted a bill to address the problem of acid violence in Uganda.
Now RISE is ready to present our research and bill to key stakeholders, including acid attack survivors, medical personnel, police, and acid manufacturers, in Uganda. Presenting the research and bill will occur via a three day conference in Uganda, hosted by RISE and BTSI. Stakeholders will share feedback about the bill and ways to improve it. RISE will then officially submit the bill to the Ugandan Parliament and urge them to sign it into law.
