As we are finishing up on the Situational Analysis, the comprehensive report on acid violence in Uganda, we received the devastating news that another two people in Uganda were attacked with acid over the weekend. Families of both of these individuals reached out to Daniel at Beyond the Scars Initiative (our partner center in Uganda) to ask for support for their family members, who are currently hospitalized.
Daniel has spoken more with the family of Francis Katami, who have asked Daniel for financial support as Francis is treated in the hospital. Hospital stays and doctor consultations are free of charge at government hospitals in Uganda. However, the costs of medications, certain medical supplies, and food are not covered. These costs can be way out of reach for an average Ugandan family (average monthly salary of approximately $80) and this is why we are reaching out to you for donations. LEARN MORE & DONATE HERE.
In fact, Francis' situation is a 'real life' example of what our data is showing-- that approximately 40% of those attacked with acid in Uganda are men, that the attacks on men are most frequently related to land disputes (as appears to be the case with Francis, though this is being investigated.) Our data is also showing that there are 17 regional hospitals with burns units in Uganda and it appears that Francis is being treated at one of these. However, survivors told us that the burns unit at Kiruddu Hospital in Kampala (the capital city of Uganda) is the largest and best equipped to treat burn survivors and there is a chance that Francis would need to be transferred to Kiruddu for additional treatment.
We will let you know more as we learn more. Thank you everyone for your continued support.
