I have been pretty angry about this poison drop on the Hawaiian island of Lehua; and at times I have expressed my opinion and even called out one of Kauai`s conservationists for supporting the poison drop. No one has given me a hard time about this, but in hindsight I've come to realize that some well meaning conservationists have not seen all of the research. Looking at the Island Conservation documents -- which omit a lot of scientific data and site their employees' reports as substantiating evidence for their claims, it's possible that I might believe it too. This is probably true for some conservationists, government officials and locals who still support this toxic method of rat eradication. The rats do have to go; however, we need to work together to find effective ways to eradicate rats on islands without the use of poison. The birds are equally important to our island's ecosystems and must be saved, in a humane, nontoxic way. I'm still angry with Island Conservation and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife for their lack of answers, lack of transparency, and for pushing these rat poison drops through the Hawai`i without collaborating with the Hawaiian community as a whole. Hawaiians say that anger is good, but they also say that what you do with that anger is what really matters. I believe that it is time to put down our weapons, roll up our sleeves, and get to work! It is important that we share knowledge and collaborate on better ways to remove invasive species to help preserve and conserve our native plants and wildlife. It is equally important that we maintain a civil tone while we do this. So let's continue sharing our research as we pivot to a collaboration process focused on transforming conservation models using the wisdom and scientific knowledge of Native Hawaiians and indigenous cultures around the world. Meanwhile, these poison drops continue worldwide with reckless abandon. We will be suffering the aftermath of these helicopter drops for a long time to come. We Need to Stop These Mass Poisonings NOW!!! ARE YOU WITH ME???
