Add transit lanes to Ocean Ave

Add transit lanes to Ocean Ave
The Issue
UPDATE 2025-12-27: An even larger effort has been started on ActionNetwork. Please send letters there!
Families, students, shoppers, and restaurant-goers are at the heart of Ingleside's Ocean Avenue. Over 12,000 passengers board the K Ingleside Muni line every day, but the K runs notoriously slowly along Ocean Ave. Three years ago, SFMTA started the K Ingleside Rapid project to fix this.
To make the K "rapid," SFMTA proposed making the K's tracks into transit-only red lanes along Ocean Avenue. These lanes separate private vehicles from public transit, ensuring a fast and reliable ride. Rapid transit better connects our residents to the places they need to be, and bring more customers for the many small businesses crucial to our neighborhood's success.
Since 2023, SFMTA has been reaching out to community stakeholders to finalize the proposal, working with merchants to add loading zones to reduce double-parking, and planning new left-turn signals at key intersections to keep traffic flowing. Red transit lanes have already existed across San Francisco for more than 40 years, and have successfully been installed in major cities around the world.
Transit lanes have also significantly reduced risky driving, speeding, collisions, and injuries in our own city. Two tragic accidents on Ocean Ave in 2025 took the lives of seniors in our community. It is time to make this vital corridor safer and better for all of our neighbors.
Almost two years ago, the SFMTA board unanimously approved the K Ingleside Rapid project. Many improvements have already been implemented on Ocean Ave, and the red paint was expected to start by January 12. Unfortunately, recent misguided efforts have stalled the project. Delaying this project right before the finish line wastes our taxpayer money, and strains our already-underfunded city infrastructure even more.
Sign this petition to urge SFMTA to proceed with the K Ingleside Rapid project, and give our neighborhood the world-class transit and streetscape we deserve.
This petition is not affiliated with any official organization. We are Ingleside residents voicing our opinions.
