Although I am not Iranian by birth, I have close Iranian friends and family, and through them I have developed a deep appreciation for Iran’s rich culture, history, and the powerful symbolism embedded in its national icons. One emblem that has always stood out to me is the Iranian Lion and Sun flag—a meaningful representation of heritage, identity, and spirit.

Today, many Iranians and those connected to Iranian culture find it increasingly difficult to see their true cultural identity reflected on global platforms, particularly in Apple’s emoji collection. Currently, the Iranian flag emoji represents only the modern version, which does not resonate with all Iranians. While it reflects the current regime, it overlooks a profound and centuries-old history that many hold close to their hearts.

The Lion and Sun emblem symbolizes strength, courage, and unity and was an integral part of Iranian identity for generations, up until the political changes of 1979. This request is not about removing or replacing the existing flag emoji, but about offering an additional option. We respectfully ask Apple to include the historical Lion and Sun flag emoji alongside the current one.

Emojis have become a universal language in the digital age, shaping how people express identity, emotion, and belonging. Adding the Lion and Sun flag would allow millions of Iranians around the world to proudly represent a symbol that reflects their true cultural and historical roots.

At a time when many Iranians are bravely advocating for freedom and fundamental rights, it feels especially meaningful to have an emblem that mirrors their resilience and courage. Including this symbol would also align with Apple’s ongoing commitment to diversity and inclusion. With regular emoji updates already in place, adding this historically significant flag is both realistic and impactful.

By including the Lion and Sun flag, Apple would honor the richness and complexity of Iranian culture and provide a more authentic and inclusive representation within its emoji library.
