The Issue

I have lived on McLaughlin Drive, across from the McLaughlin playground since this neighborhood was under construction (2013).

As many are aware McLaughlin Drive is an ongoing issue for child safety. After countless complaints or just legal requirements Spruce Grove put up speed signs that it is a playground zone of 30 Km/hr.

Even before having a child, my husband would refer to me a crazed lady that would sit outside and flag people to slow down.

There have been occasions I have stepped out into the street to get a driver attention to slow down, as well as turning my vehicle in front of a moving vehicle at the risk of a child running out into the road.

I have endlessly called enforcement about speeding and have watched them come out and ticket speeders. But this isn’t enough.

We are all aware that McLaughlin Drive as well as Nelson are high cross traffic areas.

I have spoken to the city about requesting flashing lights with the speed of the vehicle going. Was informed that because McLaughlin has a flight curve that this isn’t an option that the street needs to be straight. This also doesn’t solve the issue.

I spoke regarding having the playground hill fenced in. Was informed if the park is fenced that the speed limit would go from 30km/hr to 50km/hr.

I have set signs in the middle of the road when my child is playing outside and was told to remove them as I can’t place signs on city property or roadways.

Another neighbor set out their own speed bump and was told to remove them as well.

I have contacted the City of Spruce Grove many times in the last 11 years, and in 11 years there is still nothing being done to protect our children.

Some may be aware that I had my 2 male Cavaliers age 2&3 escape our front door and Run out and be run over by a car that not only was failing to do the speed limit, but also failed to stop after leaving them dead in the street.

I refuse to let my boys death be in vain. I am beyond grateful that this wasn’t my child or anyone else’s child. This serves as evidence that after countless near misses of children and pets in the area, that speed limit signage is not enough.

When will this be taken seriously when it’s a child?

I plan to pursue this until I can’t anymore, and if it requires me to sit on McLaughlin drive and other playground area’s throughout the city with my own camera and video taping all the traffic and failure to adhere to speed limits, to submit to city council as evidence I will.

I believe that although they are a pain, I believe that all the playground zones throughout Spruce Grove should have speed bumps,  to help enforce people to slow down to the posted speed.

Signage and ticketing is not enough.

Please sign my Petition for speed bumps in Playground zones throughout Spruce Grove.

I will be attending city council meetings to address my concerns over and over as much as I can.
