Add snack time at Heritage Middle School
The Issue
When Heritage Middle School decided to move the lunch period from 11:00 AM to 12:35 PM for 8th Graders that were just in 7th grade, they overlooked an important aspect of student wellness: hunger. As students sit through morning classes with rumbling stomachs, concentration wanes, and energy levels drop. No one performs at their best when they're hungry, yet for many hours, our children are expected to focus on learning without a genuine opportunity to refuel.
Children aged 12-14, the typical demographic at Heritage Middle School, require regular energy boosts to fuel both their physical activities and burgeoning minds. Studies have shown that regular snack times help maintain energy levels and improve concentration and cognitive function. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) emphasizes that more frequent, smaller meals, including snacks, boost mental alertness and mood.
By integrating a designated snack time into the school day, Heritage Middle School could greatly improve academic performance and enhance student well-being. A simple 10-15 minute break during the morning session would provide students with the opportunity to have a small, healthy snack, potentially supplied by the school or brought from home. This small investment in time and resources can lead to substantial gains in student outcomes, leading to happier and healthier students.
Implementing snack time is a financially manageable solution. Consider that many schools have successfully incorporated snack programs and have seen positive changes in student behavior and performance. Heritage Middle School could follow suit by conducting a pilot study to assess the benefits of snack time. Additionally, local partnerships with community health organizations could assist in providing nutritious snacks at a low cost, ensuring that every student has access to this vital resource.
For the sake of our students' health and academic success, it is vital that our school administration consider this change. Let's strive for a community where our children don't just attend school, but thrive in an environment that supports their growth and learning.
Please join us in urging Heritage Middle School to prioritize our children's well-being. Sign this petition to add snack time to the daily schedule at our school. Together, we can make a difference for our children's health, focus, and future success.
