What’s sweeter than a child receiving a baby bunny for Easter? It’s the very picture of cuteness. But the real story behind gifting rabbits during this holiday is much less uplifting. Rabbits are the third most popular pets in the U.S. Unfortunately, they are also the third most abandoned, especially after Easter. But you wouldn’t know this from looking at the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals’ (ASPCA) literature.

Rabbits make amazing pets. But, like with all companion animals, owners must be ready to take responsibility for their care and upkeep. Many owners prove not to be ready for this. After a few cute Easter photos are snapped, shelters across the country teem with abandoned rabbits.

The ASPCA is the nation’s main humane organization. It could go a long way toward helping these sweet animals. Please join me in calling on the ASPCA to include rabbits in its main adoption and pet owner responsibility campaigns.

My family got our first rabbit, Lucky, when my daughter turned 10. She was desperate for one, and swore she would never ask for anything else ever again. Well, as often happens with kids, she quickly lost interest in caring for Lucky, and he became my pet. Lucky proved to be the best  companion I could have dreamed of. He would follow me around the house and kiss my face when I picked him up.

Lucky made me realize that rabbits were the perfect pet, and because of him I am dedicated to  to rescuing his abused and abandoned brothers and sisters. It breaks my heart to know that so many are given up and those that are don’t t fare well in shelters, and they almost never survive in the wild when released.

If you visit the ASPCA’s website, you will be inundated with pictures and information about cute dogs and cats that need our help. Why, when rabbits are such great and popular pets, has the ASPCA chosen to neglect them entirely in its campaigns?

Together, we can change this. Let’s urge the ASPCA to include rabbits in its wide-reaching and successful cruelty prevention campaigns.
