The issue

As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I deeply feel the need for more representation in the digital world we all interact with daily. Currently, the availability of pride flag emojis is limited, with only the standard gay flag and trans flag being widely recognized. While these represent critical aspects of our community, they do not encompass the full diversity and vibrancy of the queer experience.

For many of us, emoji play an integral role in personal expression. They are not just arbitrary icons but symbols of identity and belonging. By limiting the variety of pride flag emojis, we are inadvertently curtailing the ways queer individuals express and identify themselves online. This impacts everything from decorating virtual name tags to curating personal playlists, where such symbols help identify safe spaces and communities.

Diversity in emoji can foster greater understanding and acceptance. In a time when digital communication is essential, it's critical that every person within the queer community feels seen, heard, and represented. Imagine the empowerment of having the lesbian flag, the bisexual flag, the pansexual flag, the non-binary flag, and so many other symbols, readily available to add color to our conversations and connections.

It's more than aesthetics; it’s about acknowledgment and the visibility of all identities under the LGBTQ+ umbrella. Making these pride flags available would enhance inclusivity and send a powerful message of support and affirmation.

In 2019, nearly 3,000 proposals were submitted for new emojis, demonstrating the high demand for diverse icons. Unicode, the consortium overseeing emoji standards, has the power to embrace this change. In recognizing the many facets of the LGBTQ+ community, Unicode can initiate a progressive step towards inclusivity that could help educate millions about the existence and legitimacy of all queer identities.

I urge Unicode Consortium to review and expand the existing pride flag emoji lineup. By doing so, they will not only encourage personal expression but also foster environments of acceptance and support. Together, let's create a digital world where everyone can find their community, express their unique identity, and feel pride in who they are.
