Add lights and speed enforcement on Northern Avenue now

The Issue

On July 22, 2025, my grandfather tragically lost his life right outside his home on Vassar and Northern in Pueblo. It was a day that changed my family's life forever. Unfortunately, since that devastating day, the intersection has witnessed multiple accidents, each echoing the danger and urgency that demand our immediate attention.

The stretch along Northern Avenue has become notorious for speeding vehicles and lack of proper lighting. These are conditions that endanger the lives of residents, pedestrians, and motorists every single day. Statistical data reinforces the narrative of peril—an increase in traffic accidents by nearly 30% over the past few years in this area, according to local reports.

Adding proper lighting will significantly improve visibility, thereby reducing nighttime accidents. Equally important, enforcement of speed limits through appropriate measures such as speed cameras and increased patrols will act as a deterrent for reckless driving.

The combination of these solutions will not only make the area safer for residents but also restore the confidence of community members who traverse this path daily. Nearby cities like Colorado Springs have demonstrated how effective these interventions can be, featuring a notable reduction in traffic incidents.

Pueblo cannot ignore the lifesaving impact these changes could have. Let's make Northern Avenue a safer place for everyone, so tragedies like my family's—or anyone else’s—no longer occur. Your support is crucial in urging Pueblo city officials to take immediate action and make these improvements.

I ask you to stand with me and advocate for change. Sign this petition to demand the City of Pueblo to prioritize the addition of lights and enforce speed regulations on Northern Avenue.

Thank you for reaching out. I want to clarify an important detail: Northern Avenue is not in my district. That area falls within Councilmembers Roger Gomez (District 4) and Ted Hernandez (District 3) districts. That said, I’m supportive of every district’s efforts to improve safety and security across the city. My district—the Eastside—faces similar challenges, and I understand the concerns you’re raising. I'm working on safety in several areas of my district as a priority. I also believe we need more police on the streets at night. I’m out in my district regularly, and I see firsthand the issues residents are dealing with. I appreciate you speaking up, and I’m with you in pushing for safer neighborhoods citywide. God bless.
