The Issue

As a dedicated player of handball at Ferns Park in Woodland, Yolo County, California, I have personally experienced the immense joy and physical benefit that playing this sport provides. It has become a vital part of my routine, particularly in the evenings when the temperatures drop and people have finished their work for the day. The handball courts at Ferns Park are a hub for the local community. They bring together players of all ages and skill levels to enjoy friendly matches, rigorous training sessions, and passionate tournaments. Many of us, however, face a significant limitation: the lack of adequate lighting. Without lighting, we are forced to cut our games and practice sessions short due to fading daylight, missing out on valuable playtime and exercise, particularly in the summer months when playing later in the evening is much more comfortable.

Beyond individual games, the absence of lighting also affects the organization of handball tournaments. These events, which draw numerous participants and spectators, often run into the evening. As it stands, tournament matches sometimes have to be shortened or postponed to the following day, which disrupts the event schedule, inconveniences players and diminishes the experience for everyone involved.

To address these issues, we are calling on the City of Woodland and Yolo County parks and recreation officials to install adequate lighting at the Ferns Park handball courts. By doing so, we can significantly extend the playtime available, allow tournaments to proceed smoothly, and greatly enhance the recreational experience. Installing lighting is a feasible solution that would benefit countless community members who use the park for exercise, socializing, and community bonding. Furthermore, improved facilities can boost local economy by attracting more visitors to the park and local area, encouraging healthier lifestyles, and fostering community spirit.

Your support is critical. By signing this petition, you are helping us make a compelling case to our local government to fund and implement a lighting project that will enhance our community space and benefit everyone who frequents Ferns Park for handball and other activities. Please sign and share to make this much-needed upgrade a reality.
