Add Greek Ethnicity to ALL US Surveys

The Issue

Growing up as a Greek American woman, I've always felt the absence of my ethnic identity in the many forms and surveys I encountered—from job applications to school admission forms, and even crucial health questionnaires. It's disheartening to check a box that never fully represented who I am, and I know many others feel the same way.

The lack of specific recognition for Greek ethnicity in America has far-reaching implications. For one, in the realm of healthcare, our genetic background can hold vital clues important for medical professionals to better understand and treat certain health conditions prevalent within our community. Recognizing Greek Americans on health surveys could lead to more personalized health care and targeted research that could ultimately save lives.

In education, the absence of a Greek ethnicity option often translates to fewer scholarship opportunities and a lack of support and representation in academic settings. Greek American students deserve to have their identity acknowledged and celebrated, just as much as any other ethnic group. This lack of representation perpetuates a cycle where Greek Americans are overlooked in narratives of diversity and inclusion, consequently missing out on tailored resources and support.

Adding Greek as a permanent option in ethnicity categories within surveys is a crucial step in acknowledging the rich cultural heritage and contributions of Greek Americans. It's time that Greek Americans see themselves reflected in the systems they interact with daily.

I urge policymakers, educational institutions, and healthcare providers to recognize and add Greek ethnicity as a permanent and distinct category in all relevant American surveys and questionnaires. Let's ensure that Greek Americans are represented and recognized in ways that honor their heritage, identities, and contributions to American society.

Please sign this petition to help us make this vital change and help every Greek American feel seen and valued in every corner of American life.
