Add bus stops to improve healthcare access in Rio Rancho, New Mexico
The Issue
During my time shadowing in the Emergency Department, I've witnessed heartbreaking situations where patients struggle just to get a ride to the hospital. Many face long waits for someone to pick them up, often taking hours and adding additional stress and delay to their healthcare needs. I have also witnessed that an alternative to this issue is that they will call EMS not because they need their services but rather as a ride to access their healthcare needs which leads to those EMS services being unavailable. This is largely because the nearest bus stops are over 2.1 miles away from key medical facilities, creating a significant barrier for those who do not have access to a private vehicle or other means of transportation.
In Rio Rancho, New Mexico, our community deserves better access to healthcare services. Public transportation must be inclusive and meet the needs of all residents, especially those seeking urgent medical care. By adding more strategically placed bus stops closer to healthcare facilities, we can remove barriers and create a more equitable system that ensures every person, regardless of their transportation means, has timely access to essential medical services.
The importance of accessible public transport cannot be overstated. According to the American Public Transportation Association (1), lack of convenient public transportation can greatly impact one's ability to receive timely medical care, leading to worse health outcomes and increased healthcare costs.
