Add Azores flag as an emoji!
The Issue
To the Teams at Apple and Google,
I am writing to respectfully request that the Flag of the Azores be added as an official emoji option in a future iOS, Android, and Unicode update.
The Azores are an autonomous region of Portugal with a unique cultural identity, history, and heritage recognized around the world. Millions of people of Azorean descent live across countries such as Canada, the United States, Bermuda, and Brazil, yet there is currently no emoji representation for the Azorean flag on smartphones or digital platforms.
Today, many regions and nations with strong cultural identities are represented through emoji flags, allowing communities to celebrate their heritage, identity, and pride in everyday communication. The absence of the Azores flag leaves a large global community without a meaningful digital symbol that reflects their roots.
For many Azoreans and members of the diaspora, the Azores flag is more than a regional emblem — it represents family history, migration, resilience, language, and cultural traditions passed down through generations. In multicultural countries like Canada and the United States, where Azorean communities are deeply established, digital representation matters.
Adding the Azores flag emoji would:
Promote cultural inclusion and representation, Recognize the identity of the Azorean people worldwide, Strengthen diversity in digital communication
Allow users to express regional pride in the same way many other communities already can
We understand that emoji additions are reviewed carefully through Unicode standards and platform approval processes.
However, we believe the Azorean community deserves consideration due to its global presence and cultural significance.
We respectfully ask Apple, Google, and the Unicode Consortium to review this request seriously and consider supporting the addition of the Azores flag emoji in future operating system updates.
