The Issue

It is estimated that around half a million people use American Sign Language to communicate during their day-to-day lives. ASL allows for communication from and with people unable to speak or to hear.

Duolingo is a popular, useful website for learning new languages. Unfortunately, it does not offer ASL as a language option, despite offering minor languages like Scots Gaelic (only about 60,000 speakers), High Valyrian (from Game of Thrones) and Klingon (from Star Trek). I have no issue with these languages - they're cool! But if Duolingo can create courses for them, it makes sense that they should create an ASL course.

Through this petition, we hope to encourage Duolingo to invest resources into the creation of an ASL course so that people can utilize the site to learn the language. This will not only be convenient for prospective students, but will provide more visibility to the language as a whole, and hopefully allow for more connection for ASL users across the country.
