The Issue

Growing up in a multicultural environment, I, like many students, find immense pride in my heritage. Korean culture has made a significant impact worldwide, influencing music, fashion, cuisine, and entertainment. With Korean language and culture becoming ever more popular, it seems only fitting that high school students should have the opportunity to further their understanding through an Advanced Placement (AP) Korean course.

Currently, students across the United States can choose from a variety of AP language courses, such as Chinese, Japanese, French, German, Italian, and even Latin. These courses offer invaluable opportunities for academic growth, cultural enrichment, and global awareness. However, despite the increasing popularity and relevance of Korean culture, there is no AP Korean course available. This is a missed opportunity for students who wish to gain a deeper connection to their heritage or learn about a culture that is rapidly shaping global trends.

Students deserve an educational system that reflects their cultures and interests. Incorporating Korean into the AP curriculum would not only acknowledge the significance of the Korean-American community but also enrich the academic experiences of students nationwide. According to the Modern Language Association, the study of Korean in U.S. higher education has grown exponentially, more than tripling over the last decade. Clearly, there's a robust interest in the language that schools need to nurture at earlier stages.

In addition to personal growth, an AP Korean course offers practical benefits. Students proficient in Korean are better prepared for diverse college programs and future international careers. With South Korea standing as the 10th largest economy in the world and a leader in technology and cultural exports, knowledge of the Korean language is a valuable asset in the global marketplace.

We urge the College Board and educational policymakers to take this step towards inclusivity and global competence by introducing an AP Korean course. This change would not only honor the heritage and identity of Korean-speaking students but also invite all students to engage with one of the world's most vibrant cultures.

Please sign this petition to show your support for the introduction of AP Korean in high schools. Together, we can make a difference in our educational landscape and provide our students with the diverse learning opportunities they deserve.
