Add an outdoor basketball court to Nancy Higgs Community Center

Add an outdoor basketball court to Nancy Higgs Community Center
The Issue
Growing up, one of the many joys of childhood and adolescence is having access to outdoor recreational facilities. Unfortunately, our community in Melbourne Beach, finds itself lacking in essential outdoor recreational facilities, particularly basketball courts. The closest outdoor basketball court is nearly ten miles away. This poses a significant inconvenience for families and individuals who have to travel that distance just to enjoy a simple game of basketball.
Basketball holds a significant place in our community's heart and its absence is felt by both children and adults alike. With a growing interest in the sport, the addition of a basketball court at the Nancy Higgs Community Center wouldn't just fill this gap but would also serve as a gathering place, fostering community spirit and encouraging physical fitness.
According to a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), regular physical activity in youth is crucial for developing strong bones, maintaining healthy weight, and lowering health risks in adulthood. An accessible outdoor basketball court will provide an outlet for fun, exercise, and the opportunity to build relationships and create lasting memories. Plus, it offers a cost-effective alternative for exercise without the need for expensive gym memberships or traveling long distances to facilities that are few and far between.
Furthermore, a community center should be a reflection of the community's needs. Investing in an outdoor basketball court not only enhances the offerings of the community center but also makes it more inclusive and accessible for all. Local governments have the power to make decisions that positively impact communities and lead to long-lasting benefits.
We are urging the local authorities, including the city council and parks department, to consider this valuable addition to the Nancy Higgs Community Center. It is a small step with a huge impact that will bring joy and health benefits to all residents for generations to come.
Please take a moment to support this initiative by signing this petition. Together, we can create a better, healthier, and more connected community.
