Albanian is spoken by over 7.5 million people globally, predominantly in Albania and Kosovo, as well as in scattered communities worldwide, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia. Despite this significant number, resources for learning Albanian are scarce, especially in easily accessible digital forms. Duolingo is a world leader in language education, boasting over 500 million users who benefit from its engaging, gamified learning environment. Including an Albanian course would not only cater to those with heritage ties but also to linguistic enthusiasts and scholars of Balkan history, encouraging cultural appreciation and preserving a rich tradition.

Albanian offers a unique linguistic journey, with its distinct Indo-European roots and grammatical structures. However, many second and third-generation Albanians in the diaspora struggle to maintain a connection with their linguistic heritage due to the lack of learning tools. Duolingo has successfully supported endangered and underrepresented languages before, such as Hawaiian and Navajo, demonstrating their commitment to diversity and cultural preservation. The inclusion of Albanian would align perfectly with this mission.
