The Issue

Music has always been a universal language—a force that brings people together across generations, geographies, and genres. And for many of us, that language was first spoken through the warm, rich sound of a vinyl record. It’s more than just a format—it’s a ritual, a memory, a way of life. The unmistakable crackle before the music begins, the feel of the sleeve in your hands, the art, the liner notes, the act of flipping the record—vinyl creates an experience that digital music simply can’t replicate.

Vinyl records have shaped music culture for decades. They’ve been the heartbeat of basement jam sessions, the star of Sunday morning listening parties, the prized possessions on collectors' shelves. And while some once saw them as relics of a bygone era, the truth is, vinyl never really went away. In fact, it's thriving—breaking sales records year after year, embraced by longtime enthusiasts and a whole new generation discovering the magic for the first time.

At our family-owned business, we've lived and breathed vinyl since 1972. We’ve watched generations grow up with records in their hands—kids who once sat on the record store floor coloring while their parents dug through the bins are now the ones running the shop, flipping discs, and passing on the tradition. It’s more than music—it’s legacy.

That’s why we believe it’s time for vinyl to have a permanent place in our digital language. A vinyl record emoji may seem like a small thing, but symbols matter. Emojis help us express who we are, what we love, and what moves us. With over 10 billion emojis shared daily across social media and messaging platforms, adding a vinyl record emoji would give music lovers, record stores, artists, and fans everywhere a way to represent a format that has shaped our culture and continues to inspire passion.

The Unicode Consortium—the organization responsible for approving new emojis—has the power to make this happen. We’re calling on them to recognize the cultural significance and continued relevance of vinyl records by adding this long-overdue emoji.

Please sign our petition and help us show that vinyl deserves its spot on the emoji keyboard. Together, we can spin this movement forward and give the vinyl community a symbol that hits all the right notes.
