The Issue

Hello,

A car accident happened on the Relief Route crossing in Alamogordo, New Mexico on September 21, 2025 where a white truck hit my family of nine on their way back to Colorado. In that car was my grandpa Arturo Espino who was transferred to El Paso TX hospital and sadly passed away on October 8, 2025 because of this accident. Countless comments have mentioned that a traffic light should be in this crossing because of how dangerous this crossing is.

I want to make an change out of my grandpa’s passing. I want to make sure justice is served and this accident doesn’t occur to other people because losing someone is the worst feeling to ever exist. So please help sign this petition to make Alamogordo, New Mexico make a change and add a traffic light, please help me make a change and make a difference so this doesn’t occur to anyone else.

The Decision Makers

Thank you for raising concerns about safety at the Alamotero Relief Route intersection. I appreciate residents speaking up, and I want to be clear about who has authority and what the City has been doing. The intersection in question is located on a state road, which means the decision to install a new traffic signal rests with the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT). For several years, the City of Alamogordo has formally requested a signal at this location and pressed NMDOT to act. To date, the state’s position has been that the intersection does not meet their warrant criteria for a signal. I have publicly challenged that conclusion in past meetings because I share the community’s safety concerns. In short: the City supports adding a light and has been advocating with the state to make it happen. If you would like to add your voice to the record that NMDOT reviews, please keep your comments respectful, specific to location and time-of-day conditions, and focused on safety impacts (sightlines, turning movements, pedestrian use, near-miss incidents). Community input helps the state reassess warrants and prioritize improvements. Thank you for engaging constructively on this issue. I will continue working with our staff and with NMDOT to advocate for a solution that improves safety at this intersection. Mayor Susan Payne

Note: The Change.org Civic Engagement Team reaches out to decision makers to let them know about petitions in their community and to help facilitate engagement with supporters. This was an email response we received from Commissioner Tapley regarding the petition: NMDOT is the ultimate decision maker on the “relief route” running through Alamogordo Sincerely Commissioner Tapley
