The Issue

Note: In addition to signing this Change.org petition, please consider calling 311 to make a request for this sidewalk. This is the best way to raise attention for the issue. Strength in numbers!

Application for Residential Sidewalk:

This proposal asks the city of Alexandria to install a sidewalk in the 3600 block of Old Dominion Blvd., which runs between Tennessee and W. Glebe. This block has a relatively high volume of pedestrian and vehicular traffic, but there is no complete sidewalk on either side of the road. There is half a sidewalk starting at W. Glebe on the east side, and the beginnings of sidewalks at each corner on the west side. Because of curb-side obstructions and parked vehicles, pedestrians are typically forced to walk in the bike lane or street. Given the volume and speeds of vehicle, the absence of a sidewalk creates unsafe conditions.

Old Dominion is the only major entrance to the northern section of Beverley Hills between Valley Drive and Russell Road – a distance of several blocks in both directions. In effect, it is a choke point for north- and south-bound vehicular and pedestrian traffic in the northern section of Beverley Hills and the nearby neighborhoods north of W. Glebe. As a result, the 3600 block carries a significant volume of vehicles travelling to and from I-395, Route 1, and Arlandria. Similarly, many pedestrians travel this block in both directions. These include: people pushing strollers and walking dogs; DASH bus riders going to and coming from the W. Glebe stops; people walking to MOMs and other businesses in Arlandria; and children with or without escorts on their way to the playground and preschool at Beverley Hills Methodist Church, Beverley Park, and/or Charles Barrett Elementary School.
