The Issue

Growing up in a bustling city, fireworks have always been a thrilling spectacle during festive seasons. Yet, beneath the dazzling lights and explosive sounds, lies a darker truth that many overlook. Too often, people set off these fireworks carelessly in the streets, causing devastating consequences. The vivid recollection of watching a neighbor's house consumed in flames due to an errant firework shell is a stark reminder of the dangers we face. Not to mention, our beloved pets cower in fear, traumatized by the incessant noise that echoes through concrete jungles.

Currently, fireworks sold in the USA come with a variety of warnings regarding their use, but they lack a critical piece of safety information. We propose that an addition be made to the warning labels: "WARNING: ILLEGAL TO DISCHARGE ANY FIREWORKS OR EXPLOSIVES WITHIN 150' OF A VEHICLE OR DWELLING." This information is vital to prevent further damage, distress, and potential loss of life.

The misuse of fireworks is not just a personal inconvenience; it is a public safety concern. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), fireworks cause an average of 18,500 fires a year, including 1,300 structure fires, 300 vehicle fires, and nearly 17,000 other fires. These incidents result in injurious consequences for both people and their properties.

By including this specific distance warning, a law in many states, we not only raise awareness but also empower local law enforcement to hold individuals accountable, ensuring fireworks are used safely and responsibly. It is a simple, yet effective step towards reducing fire hazard risks and protecting both citizens and animals from unnecessary harm.

We urge the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), as well as state and local lawmakers, to take immediate action by mandating this addition to fireworks labels. Let's work together to make our communities safer and ensure that future celebrations are remembered for all the right reasons.

Please sign this petition to call for safer fireworks practices and protect our neighborhoods from fire-related disasters and animal trauma.
