Hi friends!
First of all, thank you to EVERYONE who is signed, shared, and contributed to this petition. I think it speaks to the power of Lauren’s community, especially. When her army bands together, we get things done.
Today, staff from Representative Moon reached out. He said that, this session, the bill is dead, but they are looking to amend it and reintroduce it next session (which begins January 10, 2024). His office is interested in adding a domestic violence exception and agreed that it is similar to sexual violence. He asked me to provide any research I’ve gathered and asked if someone from our group would plan to testify at the hearing. There will also be a time for open written comments too.
He did say, however, that Senator Hettleman is the primary lead on this bill and he cannot speak to her intentions. We need to keep this petition going. Every single additional signature is persuasive and can help us get her attention and persuade the rest of Maryland’s lawmakers.
Please keep this momentum going. Share this petition with those you think would be interested. Remember, we are doing this in Lauren’s name, but it’s to protect future abuse victims and future communities from having to lose a loved one.
I love you all and am so thankful for every single signature here.
Kristin
