Adair County, Missouri, Says NO to Unregulated Industrial Development in Agricultural Area
The Issue
If you believe Adair County’s farmland, families, and rural heritage deserve immediate protection, please sign this petition.
By signing, you stand with the Adair County, MO Coalition for Responsible Development in calling for the responsible siting of industrial development, power and water safeguards, the protection of productive farmland, meaningful safeguard regulations for neighboring properties, and thoughtful decisions that put our community’s rural future first.
As industrial-scale solar projects and battery storage facilities expand and the possibility of medium-large AI data centers coming to the area grows, we must ask ourselves: What kind of future do we want for Adair County, Missouri?
For those of us who call Adair County home, industrial development can affect far more than the property where it is built. Our farmland, neighboring homes, water resources, livestock, wildlife, hunting tourism, and rural way of life may all be affected.
We respect every landowner’s right to make decisions about their property. But before signing a lease or sale contracts, we urge landowners to seek independent legal advice, research what safeguards can be put into place, understand the long-term land consequences, and talk with their neighbors. One decision made today can affect an entire community for generations.
Property rights are not just for property owners looking to develop, but also for the surrounding neighbors and community members. When a new development, industrial operation, or infrastructure project threatens to introduce pollution, lower property values, or diminish other's quality of life, it's understandable why affected residents want to protect their side of those rights.
It costs NOTHING to be a good neighbor.
Technology and progress are not the enemy. But where industrial development happens, how it is planned, and what protections are in place matter. Our agricultural land is more than acreage. It is our livelihood, our heritage, and an opportunity for the next generation to farm, raise livestock, grow food, and build a life here.
What have we learned from the solar and wind projects already in place? Are we asking landowners who have been through this what worked, what went wrong, what contract terminology caused problems, and what land and neighbor protections were missing? What do they wish they had done differently? Let’s talk to each other and ask these questions BEFORE more agreements are signed and projects are approved—not after the damage is already done.
Thoughtful planning, transparency, neighbor involvement, and enforceable safeguards like noise barriers, setbacks, deed restrictions, etc. can help protect homes, farmland, water, and the people who still live here. We encourage landowners, local leadership, utility companies, realtors, title companies and anyone with the power and ability to educate and be proactive in protecting our community and preserving the culture that is Adair County to do so every chance they get.
To the farmers and landowners who have chosen to decline industrial development offers, thank you! Your commitment to your land, your neighbors, and the future of rural Missouri through agriculture has not gone unnoticed! We see you :)
This is not about stopping progress. It is about making responsible, thoughtful decisions that preserve our choices, protect our community, and ensure that progress today does not come at a greater cost.
