In 2016, we adopted our dog, Jackson, from a rescue mission in Senatobia, MS. He was 1 of 170 animals rescued that day during Operation Dog Days of Summer by Animal Rescue Corps. At least 10 dead dogs were found on the property. The woman responsible was arrested on 11 counts of animal cruelty, 6 of which were FELONY charges. She was released on bail the same day she was arrested. She proceeded to basically beat the charges, despite all the evidence against her (ARC has a folder on their Facebook page full of photos of her property, the animals, and their conditions). She got slapped with a $5,000 fine and was told she could still have one dog. No jail time. Nothing.

When we brought Jackson home, he was broken. He literally didn't know how to be a dog or how to accept love. He had spent his entire life (2 years) in a rabbit cage. He peed, pooped, ate and slept in his bed at first. And I caught him eating his own feces. I couldn't figure out why he was acting like this. Until I did research and learned that puppy mill dogs think this is life. They don't know any better because it WAS their life. They literally are confined to one space, where they do have to eat, sleep, and go to the bathroom in that one area. They eat their own feces because they are often underfed. We had treats, toys, and a good home for him...and he was terrified of all of it. Including us. Here we are 3 years later and he's come such a long, long way. But he is still scarred. Certain things still send him into hour long shakes. And while he's learned to love and trust us, it was just a couple months ago he started to finally approach other people and let our family members love on him.

We just learned that Ellen Burford of Tate County, has violated her court order to not have any animals beyond the one they were still allowing her. At least 20 dogs, 5 cats, and 8 chickens have been removed from her property. The DA is deciding on whether or not to proceed with charges. I am asking you to sign this petition to ask the DA to please move forward with the charges, and to punish her to the fullest extent of the law. I fully believe that if she had been punished more accordingly for her crimes in 2016, she wouldn't feel so safe trying to hoard/breed animals again. If you are someone who has adopted one of the animals rescued from Ellen, I encourage you to e-mail DA Rhonda Amis with your story and your input. I know that our sweet boy has suffered serious physical and emotional damage because of this woman, and I think it's important that the DA knows how much these animals are still effected, even 3 years after her first arrest.
