Samuel Koslowsky started this petition to Acting Governor of New York Kathy Hochul and

The Tappan Zee Bridge, formally known as the Mario Cuomo bridge, was one of many questionable decisions made by the now-disgraced former governor Andrew Cuomo.  The history of the Tappan Zee Bridge's name goes back to 17th century dutch settlers whom referred to this stretch of the Hudson as the Tappan Zee, or Tappan Sea.  The bridge across it was named accordingly.  In 2017, with the construction of the new bridge, Governor Andrew Cuomo successfully passed legislation to rename this bridge to the Mario Cuomo bridge, a decision that only 14.7% of local residents of Westchester and Rockland County approved of at the time.   With the fact the Cuomo name is now associated with an ongoing sexual harassment scandal and subsequent cover up it is unfair both to locals and to the survivors of these heinous acts to have a bridge associated forever with such a scandal.

Therefore we urge that either a referendum be held on the naming of the bridge or its name be outright restored to the Tappan Zee Bridge, a politically and socially neutral name that has been used to refer to this crossing since 1955 and has no serious negative connotation behind it.
