Act on Noise Pollution from Loud Motor Vehicles
The Issue
It has been almost 2 years since we made Surrey City Council and the Surrey Police Board aware of the unlawful ear-splitting and unhealthy noise emissions from loud motor vehicles in Surrey.
The noise has become worse, unbearable and damaging to the mental and physical health of Surrey residents. We are at breaking point. We need to continue to petition for existing BC laws on motor vehicle noise emission to be enforced. After all, you pay taxes to fund the police and have the right to expect that Surrey Police does its part to control loud motor vehicles using MVA laws. If the City and Surrey Police Board continue to ignore this problem, a class action lawsuit should be considered.
Altered motor vehicles blast, roar and sputter as they revv up and speed on Surrey roads throughout the day and night. Transport Canada allows stock motor vehicles which can be adjusted to emit excessively loud decibels on our roads without control. Inconsiderate drivers disregard the laws under the Motor Vehicle Act of BC which limit the noise vehicles are allowed to make. The ear-splitting noise irritates, disturbs the peace, disrupts your sleep and damages your mental health over time.
This is an update from an earlier petition: your complaints about traffic noise pollution had been made known personally to the Public Safety Committee of Surrey City Council at their meeting on 25 Sep 2024. The Surrey Police Board closed the file so your continued reports are required to show how serious this problem is.
Please add your signatures and voice to this petition, and directly petition the
a) Surrey Police Service at their tel. no. 604-599-0502 to register your complaint with the licence plate # of the loud noisy vehicle so that they can keep track of how prevalent this traffic noise infraction is
b) The Surrey Police Board at their email address info@surreypoliceboard.ca to report the poor policing of loud noisy motor vehicles in Surrey
c) Your Member of Parliament (MP) Randeep Sarai to have Transport Canada rescind the approval for allowing loud stock motor vehicles (such as Mustangs, Chevrolets, Corvettes, BMWs, RAM trucks etc) to be sold and driven on our roads, UNLESS they comply with the decibel limits on our roads.
d) write in to the news, such as SurreyNow Leader, CTV News, Global News B.C. etc to highlight this problem.
Without any action on your part, this problem will grow worse as more inconsiderate drivers alter their motor vehicles to create traffic noise mayhem in Surrey without any regard for the law. We need everyone to do their part to tackle this problem.
