Act now to show Katy ISD that they are making a mistake by not supporting Water Polo!

The Issue

In 2022 Texas launched their first sanctioned water polo season. Almost 160 high schools immediately got water polo set up and supported, roughly ½ of those from the Houston area. Unfortunately, Katy ISD, a “trailblazing” district, declined to participate last season. Our neighboring districts: Lamar, CyFair, and many more had schools that finished top 10 in the state last year at the UIL State Championship. Water Polo is the fastest-growing sport in the state and Texas will be the 2nd largest state in the nation for the sport.

What’s disappointing about KISD’s lack of action is that some of the top players in the state live here in the district. In addition, there is a huge swimming base here in Katy – Water Polo can serve to strengthen swimmers and mitigate burnout from year-round swimming. Finally, there are a ton of great student-athletes who play basketball, baseball, soccer, football and other sports who would naturally excel in the sport.

With your support, in 2023 Katy can truly trailblaze, and field teams that will dominate on a state and national level. The good news is that the actual costs associated with starting up and supporting Water Polo are a rounding error in the KISD annual budget.

Reasons to sign the petition:

  • If you have a child or are a student who may want to play Water Polo
  • If you have a child or are a student who you think may benefit from the millions of dollars in college scholarships associated with the sport
  • If you have empathy for students who love their sport and want to be exceptional student-athletes
  • If you think we should be using the amazing pools here in the district – potentially as a profit center by hosting tournaments
  • If you want to support existing KISD coaches and teachers that might like to earn some extra money coaching
  • If you believe that UIL-supported sports should be supported by one of the top ISDs in the nation
  • If you believe that extracurricular activities can be life-altering, and if you want to give others a chance at that growth

If the district does not support Water Polo, the student-athletes who do play will not be able to compete in the UIL state championships, and may lose their chance to get into college, gain access to scholarships, etc. Leadership within KISD is making decisions on budget for 2023 and beyond in the coming weeks, so we need your support now! Please sign the petition and send it to friends, family and anyone else that can get behind the cause.
