This small yet powerful change holds the key to empowering, equalising, and accepting individuals with diverse challenges. Dear friends and fellow advocates,

I believe your influential voice and support can make a significant impact on an important cause that is close to my heart. As someone who has personally experienced the challenges of living with sight loss since birth, I am deeply passionate about advocating for equal opportunities and breaking down the barriers that individuals with disabilities face. Throughout my journey, I encountered prejudice, constant rejection, and the struggle to find my voice and secure employment.

However, I refused to let these obstacles define me. Determined to rise above the limitations society imposed, I broke free from the system in my late teens and embarked on the path of self-employment. It was through my tenacity and resilience that I not only found success but also became the Managing Director of prominent companies. Alongside my professional achievements, I have had the privilege of contributing to renowned publications such as the Weekend Times Newspaper and BBC Radio 4's In-Touch, where I highlighted the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities.

Now, I invite you to join me in making a difference. By signing this petition, you can help redefine the language around disabilities and create a society that celebrates the abilities and potential within each individual. This equates to 10 million people in the UK alone! Your influential support can amplify my message and inspire others to join my cause.

It is worth noting the success of similar campaigns, such as the shift from "coloured people" to "persons of colour," which has had a profound impact on inclusion, promoting respect and recognition of individual identity. With this in mind, I am confident that our campaign to remove the "DIS" from "Disability" will achieve great success in fostering a more inclusive society.

five compelling reasons why we should take action

1. Embracing Equality:

The term "disability" carries a connotation of inadequacy or deficiency, perpetuating a stigma that undermines the core principle of equality. By discarding the negative associations linked to this word, I aim to transform societal attitudes towards inclusivity, respect, and equitable opportunities for all. Let us celebrate and champion the tremendous abilities that each of us possesses, rather than focusing solely on our limitations.

2. Redefining Abilities:

Every individual, regardless of our physical, sensory, or cognitive differences, boasts invaluable talents and capabilities. By eliminating the "DIS" from "Disability!," we can wholeheartedly embrace the vast potential residing within each person. This redefinition of abilities empowers us all to recognise, nurture, and utilise our strengths, enabling us to make profound contributions to society.

3. Encouraging Empowerment:

The language we use plays a pivotal role in shaping perceptions and attitudes. By substituting "disability" with "ability," we empower individuals to focus on what we can achieve rather than what we might perceive as limitations. This linguistic shift fosters a sense of empowerment, encouraging everyone to believe in their own capabilities and potential. Let us create an environment that promotes self-confidence, resilience, and an unwavering belief in our abilities.

4. Breaking Stereotypes:

Stereotypes surrounding disability often lead to misconceptions, biases, and discrimination. Together, we can challenge these entrenched stereotypes and promote a more accurate and inclusive narrative. By removing the "DIS" from "Disability!," we unequivocally reject the notion that disability equates to an inability. Let us dismantle these barriers and cultivate a society that recognises and appreciates the unique contributions of every individual, regardless of their physical or cognitive variances.

5. Promoting Language Sensitivity:

Words possess immense power, and the language we use can either uplift or marginalise. By advocating for a change in terminology, I demonstrate my unwavering commitment to fostering an inclusive society. Let us set an example for future generations by embracing linguistic sensitivity, displaying respect, and acknowledging the inherent worth of every human being.

Exploring Possible Replacement Pronouns for "Disability":

As we seek to redefine the language around disability, it is worth exploring alternative pronouns that can foster a more inclusive and person-centred approach. Some suggested replacement pronouns include "diverse ability," "unique capability," or simply using person-first language, such as "person with diverse abilities" or "person with unique capabilities." These pronouns emphasise the individual's worth, strengths, and potential, while recognising their unique challenges. By considering and adopting these alternative pronouns, we can further promote inclusivity and person-centered communication.

Together, we can create a more inclusive and accepting world for individuals with disabilities.

By signing this petition, you actively support my endeavour to remove the "DIS" from "Disability!" and adopt a language that empowers and uplifts.

Join me in this transformative movement for change by signing the petition and sharing it with your family, friends, and colleagues. Together, let us stand united, one signature at a time, to make a resounding difference!

Thank you for your unwavering support and dedication to equality and inclusivity.

Warm regards,
