Act Now to Prevent the Sixth Mass Extinction and Preserve Earth's Biodiversity
The Issue
I am a resident of this beautiful planet, deeply concerned about the fate of our diverse animal species. The Earth is facing unprecedented species decline due to human activities such as habitat destruction, pollution, and climate change. According to recent research, 48% of animal species are in decline, primarily in the tropics. Alarmingly, the extinction rate is now 1000 to 10,000 times higher than the natural baseline.
This crisis threatens wildlife and us humans who depend on these ecosystems for survival. The loss of biodiversity could disrupt food chains and ecosystems that provide us with essential services like clean air and water.
The United States has not ratified the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), an international treaty aimed at conserving biological diversity, ensuring the sustainable use of its components, and promoting the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from using genetic resources. The CBD was adopted at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 and has been ratified by most countries, but the U.S. remains one of the few countries that have signed but not ratified the treaty. This means the CBD's provisions do not legally bind the U.S.
