ACT residents recognise that the export of live sheep from Australia by sea has inherent and disastrous consequences for animal welfare, which cannot be resolved whilst the trade persists. According to independent polling commissioned by RSPCA Australia, over 75% of Australians and ACT residents are in favour of the phase-out. The current Labor Government promised to phase out the live export of sheep by sea at the 2022 election, however, it has yet to propose a plan or timeframe. Recent incidents highlight the need for this legislation to pass as soon as possible, to protect the welfare of the hundreds of thousands of Australian animals suffering in the trade each year.

Petition request
Given the animal welfare concerns inherent to the export of live sheep by sea, we, as ACT residents, ask our Federal representatives to hold the Government to account and ensure that legislation defining the date of the phase-out is passed within the 47th Parliament. We further ask that the phase-out be legislated to occur within the shortest possible timeframe.
