Hey Awesome Supporters! I am so excited, my hands are shaking as I try to write this!!! Another Step Forward for The Crown Act!!!! This is so exciting and I am in tears because we are one step closer to making it a state law!!!!  One step closer that children like my grandson, Maddox will no longer be punished for their race and gender appropriate hairstyles!  One step closer to equality instead of ignorance in school dress codes! Please Keep Sharing this Petition!!!

Here is the Announcement from Representative Rhetta Andrew's Bowers:

MAJOR BILL MOVEMENT ALERT: This is my story - Almost two years have passed since the call came from my Soror about a bill that I thought Texas wasn’t ready for...but in two years time a whole lot has happened. Today, April 29, 2021, I laid out HB 392 - The TEXAS CROWN Act before the House Committee on State Affairs.
The call came as I sat exhausted after my first session and even before DeAndre Arnold. My Soror Adjoa B. Asamoah explained what was happening across the nation to me, but I couldn’t see it. By the fall and winter DeAndre had been to the Oscars - Hair Love had won and by February of 2020 I was on a flight to Houston to have a press conference, at my alma mater, Texas Southern University, in the Barbara Jordan - Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs. This was all pre-Pandemic and I was determined and committed. The CROWN Act was becoming priority legislation for me and it was tough because as diverse as my district is, I don’t serve a district that is predominantly black. I had to make sure this bill was good for all Texans. And indeed it is!!!! This is civil rights legislation. After working the floor all day to make sure I had the votes to get it out of Committee - House Bill 392 - the Texas CROWN ACT was voted out of committee with 12 ayes and 0 nays!!!! All I can do now is rejoice in the hard work because WE DID IT!!! I want to thank my Soror Adjoa for thinking enough of me and believing in me, my amazing staff that is as diverse as HD113 - Buffy, Mallory, and Ariana! Thanks to my Joint Authors - Reps. Ron Reynolds, Toni Rose, Carl O. Sherman Sr. and Brad Buckley - your encouragement has kept me going! To the team of advocates and witnesses that brought it home today telling their stories - Aicha Davis, Stephanie Boyce, Tashara Parker, Hope Cozart, Haley Taylor Schlitz, Lisa Cylar Barrett - from the press conference & witness list - Dakari Davis and DeAndre Arnold, with West Indian roots no less - his dad’s Trinidadian and my Dad was from St. George’s, Grenada. The Texas Legislative Black Caucus for making HB 392 a priority bill this session. For Rooted the series on WFAA. I am beyond grateful for all of you that signed the petition, that have written letters, called your representatives and more! Just know that this ain’t over and we cannot stop!!! We still have to get it on the calendar and over to the Senate. We have had some victories today that we can celebrate, but we’ve still got work to do! Stay tuned and stay ready! #txlege #thecrownact #HD113 #hb392 #wfaarooted #texas #neverunderestimateawoman #westindian #diaspora
