Petition: Give Goalkeepers and Defenders Equal Recognition in Football Awards

Why This Matters
Football rewards attackers for their peaks but punishes goalkeepers for their mistakes. An attacker can miss all game, score one simple tap-in, and become a celebrated hero. A goalkeeper or defender can be flawless for 89 minutes, make one minor error, and take 100% of the blame for a loss.
Goalkeeping is a brutal game of psychological warfare that takes an immense toll on mental and physical health. A keeper must maintain absolute focus while completely isolated. For the ball to even reach them, it has already passed through the other ten players on the pitch. Defenders likewise risk their bodies with exceptional skill and courage. We act as the final insurance policy for the team, yet our contributions are treated as a secondary afterthought. Without defensive positions, attackers would not even have the freedom to attack.

The Ultimate Example: The 2022 World Cup Final
The peak of this injustice occurred at 122:43 in the World Cup Final. Argentina’s Emiliano Martínez made a physics-defying save against Randal Kolo Muani to stop the ball from hitting the back of the net. If that ball goes in, France wins.
Lionel Messi ran straight to Martínez at the whistle, recognizing him as the ultimate wall. Yet, the media immediately erased the collective team effort. Nobody says, "Nicolás Tagliafico or Ángel Di María won the World Cup," even though the entire team played exceptionally well. Instead, the narrative became: "Messi won the World Cup."
This toxic narrative fed into the Messi vs. Ronaldo debate. The media used a team trophy to declare Messi the winner, framing it as a solo achievement. In reality, Messi's legacy was completely dependent on a split-second reflex save by his goalkeeper.

The Staggering Reality
The historical bias in football awards proves that individual accolades are broken:
Over 60 attackers and midfielders have won the Ballon d'Or.
Only 3 defenders have ever won it.
Only 1 goalkeeper has ever won it (Lev Yashin, over 60 years ago in 1963).

Our Demand
This petition does not discriminate against other positions. We just need to get the word out to put defensive positions higher and value them fairly. Winning hinges on a strong defense just as much as attacking prowess. We urge award committees to:
Adjust selection criteria to weigh defensive contributions, clean sheets, and high-stakes saves equally against goals.
Create separate award categories that specifically highlight and elevate defensive excellence.
Include more former defenders and goalkeepers on award voting panels.
Join me in signing this petition to demand fairness, integrity, and equal recognition for the heroes who protect the goal.
