Acknowledge Dogs as Sentient Beings to Reduce Shelter Killings

Acknowledge Dogs as Sentient Beings to Reduce Shelter Killings
The Issue
As someone who believes in the intrinsic value of all creatures, I am deeply troubled by the lack of recognition for dogs as sentient beings. Dogs are not mere objects; they are living, breathing, feeling beings, capable of experiencing joy, pain, and fear. The law often sees them as such, as evidenced by the existence of animal cruelty laws across all 50 states. However, this acknowledgement needs to be expanded beyond the realm of criminal law to include aspects like sheltering and mercy killing.
Every day in our country, numerous shelter dogs are put down. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), about 670,000 dogs are euthanized in US shelters yearly. This heart-wrenching statistic is not acceptable. Recognizing dogs as sentient beings can pave the way to amending policies regarding shelter animals and decreasing the number of animals being euthanized.
This petition calls upon the legislative bodies of all states to recognize dogs as sentient beings explicitly. This recognition will not only align the statutes with modern understanding of animal cognition and emotion but also provide more solid grounds for improving the conditions of shelter dogs and reducing unnecessary euthanizations. Please sign this petition if you believe in fairer treatment for our loyal companions. Together, we can advocate for changes that respect and protect their right to life.
