Petition for School Crossing Guards for Achievement First Amistad High School.
The Issue
Amistad High School located on Dixwell Avenue, a very busy and traffic-filled, street. There is no stoplight within a 500-foot radius of the school meaning that a tremendous amount of students cross directly in front of the school based on their own discretion. Despite there being a crosswalk, this crosswalk is over 100ft away from the main entrance in which not many students utilize this and often times rush in front of a moving vehicle.
On Friday February 7th, 2020, two Amistad students frantically rushed across the street which caused a rear end vehicle collision, the airbags were deployed, and the paramedics were called. Fortunately as far as we are aware no one was hurt. This event is not the first accident to have happened in front of the school, in that though, in previous years, motorist, Frederick Washington was involved in a fatal accident on November 2nd, 2017. As high school student's events like these can be very gruesome to witness, and this problem needs to be addressed. As a walker myself, crossing this street is very difficult when oftentimes, traffic does not stop and you are forced to quickly run across so that you aren't hit.
In Connecticut the school zone speed limit is 25 mph, yet, there are no speed bumps or traffic lights near the school to have vehicles slow down. By implementing a school crossing guard, this can reduce the chances of an accident, as stated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration it has been noted that 1 in 4 high school students are distracted walkers, and do not pay attention while crossing the road.
It is only a matter of time before an Amistad Scholar gets into a collision with a car, and can result in an injury or even death. And by having a school crossing guard can reduce the risk of a pedestrian and vehicle collision.
