Why this petition matters

Started by Melody Reil

Many UNCO students and faculty have been concerned with the dining and housing services this year. Their lack of attentiveness to issues affecting students on a day to day basis is truly shocking. The dining hall selections have been slim and many times inaccessible. The food has also been cold recently or only partially cooked.

Since the closing of TK dining hall, Holmes has had significantly more foot traffic. This has made it difficult for students to get to class on time due to long lines and limited choices in the dining hall. It is also very unfair to students who have to commute from across campus to eat. The dining hall has also not allowed students to get more than one serving if they would like one. This makes students fear that they’ll be late to class or penalized for staying late at the dining hall to get more food. Management also verbally disapproves of students getting more than one entree/serving at a time to limit food waste. However, there is still a large amount of food waste and it may shame students for wanting to get a second serving of food. This can be harmful for those with eating disorders as it suggests that they have already had enough food.

Trays in the dining hall have also been taken away. Although students can ask for them if desired, workers are not so kind if they are requested. Taking away the trays has made it more difficult to carry all of our food and can make it harder for students with accessibility issues to be independent.

Mold in the building has been a persistent issue in Turner Hall since last year as well as Lawrenson. We have talked to other students in the building who also have issues with mold in their rooms and showers. Housing has been contacted multiple times with little to no helpful communication. We have cleaned it and it has come back. There are no openable windows in Turner Hall and no working vents in the bathroom to help with air flow. They suggested that we either keep cleaning the space or move. This gives us a temporary  treatment to a permanent and persistent issue. We live in the same room as last year and there were no measures over the summer taken to clean or get rid of the mold issues or other issues within the rooms. They are not giving us or anyone else the proper treatment for mold which is affecting our health and well being. There is mold growing in our shower head and it is impossible to feel clean while taking a shower in a mold infested shower with a moldy shower head. This problem is not only affecting my roommates and I but other people in our building and other buildings as well.

All we want is for the money to pay every year to go to this school and the thousands of dollars we pay for housing and our dining contracts to be put to good use. UNCO preaches the student first mindset but it does not seem that they care about the opinions/concerns of their students or their student’s parent to take care of the most prevalent issues. We feel unheard and helpless and would love if you would sign this petition!!
