Accorder la Légion d’Honneur à Madame Gisèle Pelicot
The Issue
Décerner la Légion d'honneur à Mme Gisèle Pelicot.
(English version below)
Award the Legion of Honour to Madame Gisèle Pelicot.
I am asking President Macron to award the Légion d'honneur to Mme Gisèle Pelicot as a tribute to everything she has endured, both in public and at the hands of her torturers.
By insisting that the trial of her ex-husband and 50 other people accused of raping her be held in public, Ms Pelicot exposed a network that facilitated attacks on women and allowed men to treat their victims as chattel to be abused at will.
Far from being humiliated, Mrs Pelicot remained stoically present throughout the hearings and held her head high while the defenders of the indefensible sought to sully Mrs Pelicot's reputation and raison d'être.
Mr President, by awarding the Legion of Honour to Madame Pelicot, you will not only be underlining her personal sacrifice, but also ensuring that this issue is not relegated to the background and that women receive the respect they deserve.
Madame Pelicot must surely rank among the greatest women France has ever known, alongside Simone Veil, Edith Piaf, Marie Curie, Joan of Arc and Josephine Baker.
