Access to Restrooms at University High School

Access to Restrooms at University High School
The Issue
Every day, students at University High School encounter an unnecessary hurdle: locked restrooms. As someone directly affected by this issue, I can attest that it impedes our learning experience and infringes upon our basic rights. Bathrooms are not a privilege - they're a right! It's mind-boggling that we should find ourselves waiting in absurd lines to use the restroom during our breaks, when we are told to use the restroom but are instead faced with long lines that cut into our class periods and waste our educational time.
This struggle is due to the insufficient staffing assigned to manage and open restrooms and bridging this gap should be a priority. Lack of accessible restrooms in schools can have adverse effects on a student's health and focus, according to educational and health experts (source: American Academy of Pediatrics). We must be tireless in our pursuit of optimal learning conditions, ensuring every student can timely access a restroom when they need to, especially during breaks. Our school has a 24 acre campus and instead of using restrooms conveniently close to us we are forced to walk across campus just to relieve ourselves of a basic human necessity.
We aim to address this pressing issue by calling for an improvement in staffing for restroom management and a clear plan regarding which restrooms will be open at all times. We aim to get at least both the classroom and main building restrooms open at all times during school hours. Now of course we wish that all restrooms including the cafeteria bathrooms to be open at all times but knowing as that may be an issue, we are hoping for the implementation of the cafeteria restrooms opened during nutrition at the least.
We urge the school administration of University High School to secure our comfort and health within the academic environment. We are asking you to prioritize the immediate implementation of appropriate staffing and comprehensive planning for restrooms, recognizing it not as a luxury but a basic, essential facility.
Please join us in rectifying this situation and making University High School a better place for all its students. Sign the petition.
