Mental health affects all of us, whether personally or through someone we care about. I have seen peers and those close to me struggle with anxiety, depression, and overwhelming stress. I have also witnessed the devastating impact mental illness can have on families when someone known to my family lost their life after struggling with their mental health. Yet many people feel unable to seek help because of long wait times, high costs, or fear of being judged. No one should have to suffer in silence simply because support is out of reach.

According to the World Health Organization, one in four people will experience a mental or neurological disorder at some point in their lives. Despite how common these challenges are, access to mental health care remains limited for millions of people.

Because of this, I urge all of us to take a stand. We need greater investment in affordable and accessible mental health services, including community-based programs that focus on prevention, early intervention, and ongoing support. We must also increase mental health education in schools, workplaces, and public spaces to reduce stigma and encourage people to seek help when they need it.

By signing this petition, you are calling on the Henrico County Board of Supervisors to increase funding for local mental health resources, expand access to affordable counseling services, strengthen school and community mental health programs, and launch public awareness initiatives that connect people with the support they need.

Mental health is just as important as physical health.
