Revoke Cats' Golden Globe Nomination and Oscars VFX Campaign. #CancelCats
The Issue
Dear Hollywood Foreign Press Association(HFPA) and Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences(AMPAS),
We people might not have any power over the election process, but we may ask you to consider revoking Universal Pictures' Cats Golden Globe nomination and Oscars campaign for VFX or any award it is still competing for. The movie's reviews currently sit at a 17% RT score, 32% Metacritic score, and 2.6/10 on IMDB. The movie bombed over the past weekend with $6.5m, and it's not because it competed against Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, it's because people were horrified with the movie itself and it's visuals. There are many reasons you should consider revoking Cats, and here's why:
1. Horrific and uncanny character designs where all the characters are humanoid cats that are poorly made via CGI motion capture.
- To make matters worse, when a character turns or tilts their head, their faces barely move, making them look off-center.
- The designs are also inconsistent, as some characters have clothes, while others don't. Also, some characters walk like humans, while others walk on all fours.
2. Overuse of CGI, which causes almost everything in the film to feel fake. Even simple objects could've been used as props instead of CGI.
3. Though not as bad as the character designs, the design in most of the areas is also ugly, as they either lack color or have too much color, and look like they have been abandoned for a very long time.
4. The original musical itself received mostly mixed reviews, which can be considered a red flag.
5. There is barely a plot. When it does appear, it is usually presented through the songs throughout the movie, which can be difficult to follow.
- Even if one were to understand what the plot is, they will find it to be a boring and uninteresting one.
6. Most of the characters are introduced through songs, but some don't appear at all after their song, making them mostly pointless.
7. Nearly all of the songs are unoriginal, as they come from songs in the musical or somewhere else.
- The songs are usually only used to introduce a character.
8. The acting is so bad it can come off as unintentionally hilarious to some. The horrible character designs aren't helping matters at all as they will make people take the acting even less seriously.
9. Questionable casting choices, most notably casting actors who have little to no involvement in the music industry such as James Corden.
10. There are some bits of comedy, but nearly all of it comes off as cringy and unfunny, such as using cat puns.
11. Many of the characters act horny, like real cats when in heat, which is very inappropriate for a PG-rated movie.
12. Macavity, the main antagonist, is very generic, as he is just one of those villains who does bad stuff because he's designed to be bad.
13. The size of the characters is inconsistent. Sometimes they appear to be as large as a human, or as small as a mouse.
Hollywood Foreign Press Association(HFPA) and Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences(AMPAS), I know that I and everyone not involved with both organizations don't have that power, but we may ask that you think about critics and audiences right now and possibly consider other options.
Thank you for reading this and understanding our concerns
