Stop the poetic injustice, Academy. Recognize Suffragette!
The issue
Dear Academy Members
You have some 'splaining to do...
HOW COULD SUFFRAGETTE BE OVERLOOKED?
There is poetic irony in ignoring a quality film about the struggle of women to be treated fairly. What's more is that the Academy process of nomination seems so secretive - it's disenfranchising.
The Oscars are scheduled for February 28, 2016. My appeal is that you make a formal comment on how Suffragette didn't cut the mustard for this year's list of nominations.
QUALITY WHEN YOU SEE IT
For those of you reading this petition who haven't seen Suffragette, do yourself a favor and see it.
Like many other working parents of small children, living away from close family and friends, I don't get to do fancy things like go to the movies. So when the opportunity to go on a date with my betrothed came up, I jumped on it!
We went to a matinee (don't judge - we had to go when the kids were at day care). Suffragette was playing. I had no intentions of seeing Suffragette. Perhaps I was scared by the topic - I guess I didn't truly understand it... I believe in equity and fighting for good, but aggressive, man-hating feminism rubs me the wrong way.
But it's not about that. The movie moved me. It was beautiful and raw. It is about struggle, a fight to be treated with respect, to be treated fairly. I laughed, cried, jumped and learned. Everything about this movie was superbly executed. In short, it took me on a journey to another place and time. I thought for sure this movie would win an Oscar!
So you could understand that I was quite taken aback when the list of Oscar nominees came out and Suffragette had NOT made the cut. The emotions I felt were similar to those I felt during the film. I felt an injustice. In fact, I felt moved enough to make this petition.
I am appealing to you, Members of the Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts and Sciences to consider your process and actions to ensure that they are fair and do not unintentionally perpetuate injustice. Pay Suffragette the respect it deserves. Stop the irony and explain yourselves.
From my heart to yours
Natasha
