AC Transit- Make Sure ALL Kids Get to School
0 have signed. Let’s get to 2,500!
AC Transit plans to eliminate special school routes to Montera Middle and Skyline High. Between these two public schools, over 1000 kids depend on AC Transit. There are no regular bus lines that can get kids to these schools. They are located up winding roads with no sidewalks. These schools are diverse and serve all of Oakland. Kids attending Montera, Oakland's largest middle school, hail from 45 different elementary schools. Skyline, the second largest high school, has students from 28 middle schools. All students pay bus fare to ride.
Why are the routes to Montera and Skyline threatened? When California pulled transportation funding from OUSD, the district could no longer afford to pay nearly 2.5 million per year to AC transit for school transport. OUSD is the only district paying (for the last 20 years). AC Transit provides bus service to all other districts and private schools for free. In fact, 50 of the 156 AC transit lines are dedicated school lines running all over the county. Included in these special Service to Schools Lines, or "600 routes," are buses to private schools including Head Royce, Hebrew Day, Bentley, Holy Names, and Bishop O'Dowd.
Under the circumstances, OUSD made a choice for the benefit of public education. Every dollar given to AC transit from OUSD is a dollar not being spent in the classroom. The AC Transit Board is meeting on April 12. Add your signature and comment if you want AC Transit to treat OUSD students like every other district and private school- and get these kids to school.
