The Issue

In just three weeks of Israeli bombardment of Gaza, more children have been killed than in wars around the world in a year.

The war in Gaza has already claimed the lives of more than 8,500 people, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health. Nearly 70 per cent of those reported dead since the war broke out are children and women, as noted by the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

Since the start of the war on 7 October, 3500 children and adolescents have been killed in Gaza, to which must be added 33 in the West Bank and 29 in Israel. Another 1000 children are missing and may be trapped or dead under the rubble, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). In addition, more than a million children and adolescents face severe shortages of water, food and basic necessities, and lifelong trauma.

The numbers are devastating and growing daily.

In the words of UNICEF, Gaza has become a graveyard for children.

Given the scale of this tragedy, it is essential to declare a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza. However, despite efforts by the United Nations to achieve such a ceasefire, it has not yet taken place and, in fact, the conflict could become entrenched, with devastating consequences for the civilian population.

Therefore, while efforts continue at the diplomatic level to maintain the opening of the Rafah crossing and to ensure (and increase) the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza, we call on the State of Israel, the European Union and the International Community to allow the immediate opening of safe humanitarian corridors in the Gaza Strip for the evacuation of children with their mothers and orphaned children, to be cared for and subsequently re-housed with host families in countries willing to cooperate.

It is urgent that the more than 1.1 million children in Gaza who are suffering from this nightmare leave behind the horror they experience daily in the Strip and can continue their lives and education in a safe environment.

Stop the massacre of innocent children, women and civilians in Gaza.

HUMANITARIAN CORRIDORS FOR CHILDREN NOW.
