The issue

In 2019, Labor pledged to ensure abortion services were available in public hospitals. Opposition spokesperson for Women at the time, Tanya Plibersek, said a Labor government would require termination services in hospitals - tying this reproductive care to their Commonwealth funding arrangement.

The ABC has reported that between a quarter to a third of Australian women will choose to have an abortion at some point in their lives.

Abortion remains a postcode lottery in Australia. Out of pocket costs are high, clinics are scarce and religiously-affiliated health providers who receive public funding continue objecting to providing this crucial health service. At a time when multiple states are facing threats to repeal abortion laws, it is more important than ever that these services are accessible: free, actively available and de-stigmatised.

By signing this petition, you are communicating to the Albanese Government that you support accessible reproductive care for all. Abortion is legal in Australia, but it remains inaccessible. It must be available in all hospitals and considered a requirement to retain public funding.
