The Issue

When I first discovered that the consumption of cats and dogs is still legal in several countries, my heart sank. This revelation came from a moment of curiosity about a stereotype regarding the Asian community. It was shocking to learn that in nations such as Vietnam and Indonesia, this practice continues today. It may not impact my daily life directly, but I find it profoundly inhumane and cruel. Cats and dogs are beloved companions, not sources of food.

These animals hold a special place in so many of our lives. They provide us with love, comfort, and companionship. Allowing them to be used as food undermines the special relationship we have built with them over centuries. Despite international progress in animal rights, the legal consumption of cats and dogs persists in some regions, causing unnecessary suffering and cruel deaths for countless animals each year.

Legatee data is harrowing—over 30 million dogs and cats are slaughtered each year for their meat across Asia. These animals suffer under appalling conditions, often accompanied by abuse and inhumane slaughter methods. Scientific studies have shown that animals subjected to stress and cruelty can release hormones and toxins that may pose health risks to humans when consumed.

Abolishing the legality of eating cat and dog meat will require concerted global efforts. International governments, animal rights organizations, and individuals who care about animals need to work together to draft and implement effective policies. Lobbying for stringent animal welfare laws in countries where this practice is prevalent can create a significant impact.

Petitions, such as this one, can serve as a powerful tool in advocating for legislative change by showing governments that there is a shared, global moral stance against the consumption of animal companions. Mass awareness campaigns and educational programs can also shift cultural norms and demonstrate the benefits of seeing cats and dogs as family members, not food sources.

By signing this petition, you can be part of a global voice calling for the end of this inhumane practice. Let us unite in reimagining a world where all animals are treated with the respect and dignity they deserve. Please add your signature to help abolish the consumption of cats and dogs worldwide.
