Abolish the Recognition of Valentine's Day as a National Holiday
The Issue
I, like many others, have suffered due to the societal pressures and expectations that come with romance. For me, breaking free from these chains was akin to overcoming a severe addiction. It is for this reason that I urge you to consider our plea - abolish the recognition of Valentine's Day as a national holiday.
Valentine's Day has long been associated with love and romance but it often leads to feelings of exclusion and depression for those who are single or recovering from heartbreak. A study by the American Psychological Association revealed that 40% of people report feeling lonely on Valentine’s Day (APA, 2017). This statistic is not insignificant; it represents millions across our nation who suffer silently every February 14th.
Moreover, this holiday perpetuates unrealistic expectations about love and relationships which can lead to emotional distress. The commercialization of love puts undue pressure on individuals in relationships to conform to societal standards which may not align with their personal beliefs or circumstances.
By removing Valentine's Day from our list of national holidays, we can take one step towards creating an environment where individuals are free from the tyranny imposed by romantic ideals. We can foster a society where love is celebrated in all its forms - platonic, familial or self-love - without being confined within the boundaries set by one particular day.
